Peter Röger (born August 8, 1922 in Wiesdorf - Küppersteg , today in Leverkusen , † September 24, 1999 ) was a German football player and official.
First steps and the path to excellence
Peter Röger was a classic street footballer who, at the age of 14, initially joined Jahn Küppersteg , the home club of long-time record national player Paul Janes . After a few weeks he moved to the other side of the Dhünn river and joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In 1940, the then 18-year-old played his first game for the Werkself . The following year he was drafted as a soldier for World War II and continued his career at Bayer 04 in 1945. He quickly became a regular player and rose with the team in the II. Division . From then on, the Werkself headed towards first class and became district champions in 1949. After defeats in the decisive promotion games in 1948/49 against 1. FC Köln, which emerged from a post-war merger, and later against FC Schalke 04, two opportunities for promotion to the first-class Oberliga West were missed, Röger rose to the top German division with Bayer in 1951 .
Oberliga West
The defender was in 115 league games for the Schwarzroten in the following five years and scored one goal. In 1954/55 Bayer achieved its best ranking in the league with third place in the table and narrowly failed in terms of reaching the final of the German championship. After a missed penalty, the Bayer team gave up a 2-0 lead in the decisive game against SV Sodingen . In the following year Röger surprisingly got relegated with the Werkself from the first division and from then on played again in the second division.
According to the club, Röger has stood around 500 times for the Bayer team, including friendlies.
Career continuation in the Bayer reserve
Regarding the end of his career, Röger said as early as 1954: “If I ever have to resign, then I would like to be replaced by a young player from our ranks, with whom I might then take some advice from my wealth of experience on the way. ”With this in mind, Röger decided to continue playing in the second team after his professional career was over.
Chairman
Three years after finishing his professional career, Röger was elected chairman of the football department in 1960. Bayer initially managed to return to the Oberliga West under his leadership. After the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963, however, the club was back in second class. The team fell apart and the departures could not be adequately replaced. This meant that Röger had to resign as chairman in 1964.
