Klaus Dörr (* 1961 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is a German theater director who has been running the Volksbühne Berlin on an interim basis since 2018 .

Career

Dörr studied economics in Berlin and wrote his thesis on the "Possibilities and Limits of Economic Control of Theaters" using the example of the Berliner Ensemble GmbH. At first he did an internship at the Berliner Ensemble ; from 1997 to 1999 he was employed as an assistant to the technical director. According to Dörr, the new director of the Berliner Ensemble, Claus Peymann , did not want to continue to employ him. Dörr then worked as a producer, production manager and consultant for independent and institutional theater before he was appointed managing director of the Berlin Maxim-Gorki-Theater in 2006 . In 2009 he took over the post of deputy director there. When Armin Petras , who brought Dörr to Gorki, took over the management of the Schauspiel Stuttgart in 2013 , Dörr succeeded him and became artistic director and deputy director under him. In 2016, Petras announced that he would be resigning his directorship in Stuttgart early in the summer of 2018.

In March 2018 Dörr was presented as the future managing director of the Volksbühne Berlin . At the beginning of the 2018/19 season he was to succeed Thomas Walter, whose contract expired at the end of the season. Less than two weeks after the announcement, the Berlin Senate reached an agreement with Chris Dercon , the previous director of the house, after persistent criticism of his work, to end the directorship with immediate effect. As a result, Dörr temporarily took over the director's business on April 13, 2018. He continued to perform his duties in Stuttgart until the end of the 2017/18 season - with a reduced workload; According to his own statements, he wanted to forego 30% of his Berlin and 50% of his Stuttgart salary during this time. Instead of Dörr, Nicole Lohrisch was finally appointed (also ad interim ) as the new managing director of the Volksbühne .

In mid-2018, the Berlin cultural administration first confirmed that Dörr should remain interim head of the Volksbühne until summer 2020. At the beginning of 2019, his directorship was extended again until summer 2021.

Positions

In a guest post for Die Welt in 2001 Dörr spoke out in favor of understanding theater art “as a social project”, “not as a commodity, service, even consumer good”. For theaters, “flexible framework conditions and planning security must be created” that enable them to “pursue their real task: the art of theater”.
