successes

Zimmermann took part in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome with the epee team, which finished in fifth place. Before the Olympic Games in 1964, he took third place on the German rankings, which would qualify him for the games. Nevertheless, he was not considered by sports manager Güse as "not useful for the team". He was accused of "complaints" and "rambling statements about his own defeats". His inarticulate cries on the fencing piste were also criticized. His "Hööh" make a fool of himself and the team. At the Olympic Games in 1968 he took part again and finished 13th in the individual, which made him the best German participant together with Franz Rompza . The team narrowly missed a medal and finished fourth.

1955 and 1957 Zimmermann became German master in epee fencing. In addition, he finished in 1962 , 1965 and 1968 the second and in 1961 , 1964 and 1966 third place in the German championships. In 1954 the DFC Düsseldorf became German team champions in men's epee, the exact team line-up is not known. With the DFC Düsseldorf team, Zimmermann also won the Solingen sword in 1961 . As a senior, he won the German Senior Championships several times.
