Dieter catcher

Dieter Fänger (born October 12, 1925 - † March 8, 2016 ) was a German sword fencer , German champion and Olympic participant. In the 1970s he was Vice President of the German Fencing Association . He fought at RFC Düsseldorf.

Life and Achievements

Catcher took part in the 1960 Olympic Games both in men's epee singles and with the team. Together with Paul Gnaier , Fritz Zimmermann , Georg Neuber , Helmut Anschütz and Walter Köstner , he finished fifth with the team. In the individual, he was eliminated in the third of five rounds. In 1961 he won the German individual championships, and in 1958 he was runner-up. He took part in a total of five fencing world championships and narrowly missed the entry into the final round in 1961 after a playoff.

Fänger worked as a detective director and, after his active career, Vice President Sport of the German Fencing Association. He was considered a supporter of the controversial coach Emil Beck, who was controversial because of his new training methods .

Fänger was a holder of the Federal Cross of Merit.
