Walter Köstner

Walter Köstner (born June 28, 1936 in Bayreuth ) is a former German fencer . He won four German championships in saber fencing and one with the sword and took part in three Olympic Games between 1960 and 1968. He changed clubs several times during his sporting career. First he fought in his place of birth at TS Bayreuth, later at FR Nuremberg, for MTV Munich , FC Berlin-Grunewald and FCR Hamburg.

Köstner learned fencing from his father and was already successful as a teenager. At the age of sixteen he was a member of the TS Bayreuth team, which won the 1952 German team championships in epee fencing. In 1957 he won the German junior championships in saber and epee, in 1958 he was able to defend the title in saber again. As a junior he won the bronze medal at the German saber fencing championships in 1957 , and one year later ( 1958 ) he became German champion with the sword. Four more German saber championships followed in 1964 , 1967 , 1968 and 1969 .

In 1960 Köstner took part in the Summer Olympics in Rome . With the epee team he finished fifth, in the saber singles he was eliminated in the third of five rounds. At the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo in 1964 , Köstner made it to the final of the last eight fencers in the saber singles and shared seventh place with his compatriot Dieter Wellmann . The saber team took sixth place. In 1968 in Mexico , Köstner once again took part in the Olympic Games in saber singles and with the saber team. The team was fifth, in the individual he was eliminated in the second round.
