Hartmann was trained by the Italian fencing master Arturo Gazzera , who was brought to Offenbach by Jakob Erckrath de Bary in 1899. She was a close friend of Helene Mayer and looked after her early on at tournaments. In 1923 she was runner-up at the first German championships in women's floret. This was followed by third places in the German championships in 1924 and 1925 and two further runner-up championships in 1926 and 1928 .

Since 1926 there have also been occasional competitions in women's epee, in 1926 and 1927 even German championships. Hartmann won the first German championships in this new discipline in 1926 and thus became the first German female champion with the sword. Hartmann also took part with the sword at the German Fighting Games in Cologne in 1926 and came fourth. In the foil she took second place behind Helene Mayer. After 1927, the number of women's epee competitions decreased again, and German championships were not held again until 1987 after 1927 .

After the Second World War, Hartmann played a key role in the reconstruction of FC Offenbach together with her family.
