André Weßels

André Weßels (born October 21, 1981 in Recklinghausen ) is a German foil fencer , world champion and Olympic medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games in London . Furthermore, he is multiple World Cup winner in individual and with the team as well as multiple German champion in individual and with the team. He was part of the A-team of foil fencers and fights for the Olympic Fencing Club Bonn ( OFC Bonn ).

He is a sports soldier (senior sergeant major ) in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Cologne .

Career

From 1998 to 2001 he had many successes in the junior sector. Among other things, he was four times junior world champion, overall junior world cup winner in 2001, junior athlete of the year 2001 and won several medals at junior European championships. In 2000 and 2001 he won the German championship of active foil singles as a junior. At the World Cup in Lisbon he won silver in singles and gold with the team. In 2002 he was also voted DFB fencer of the year. A year later at the World Cup in Havana he won another bronze with the team. At the 2004 Olympic Games , he finished 24th in the singles and sixth in the team.

He started for the Tauberbischofsheim fencing club until 2008 and then for the Bonn Olympic fencing club from June 2008. After that it was a little quiet around him until he won the bronze medal in the individual at the European Fencing Championships in Plovdiv in 2009 . In 2011 Weßels won bronze with the team at the World Championships in Catania . At the European Championships in Legnano in 2012 , he won bronze with the team. With the team, he won bronze in the men's floret at the 2012 Olympic Games . Actually only intended as a substitute, he had to stand in for Sebastian Bachmann in the fight for third place against the USA after an injury to Sebastian Bachmann and helped secure victory.
