Natt och Dag
Natt och Dag (German: night and day ) is the family name of a baronial family belonging to the Swedish nobility .
origin of the name
The knight dynasty from Östergötland is documented for the first time in 1280. According to legend, it has roots that go back to around 1030. As with the other families of the Swedish nobility, no name affix makes it clear that they belong to the nobility. The surname Natt och Dag initially only served to identify gender as a family association. Due to the usual name formation in Scandinavia through patronyms and matronyms , the surname Natt och Dag did not appear until the 18th century. The older ancestors are therefore often only identified in the literature by the addition (Natt och Dag) in brackets . The name itself is traced back to the family's coat of arms, on the bright golden field above the lower one in midnight blue. During the time of the imperial administrations of Svante Sture and his son, the coat of arms of the Natt och Dag family was struck on the Swedish coins.
