At the German Fencing Championships in 1997 , individual and team competitions were held in the disciplines of men's epee, men's saber and men's floret. In addition to foils, epee swords were also fought for women, and women's saber championships were first held in 1999 . Since there was no individual battle for third place, the two semi-finalists shared them. The championships were organized by the German Fencing Association .
