At the German Fencing Championships in 1978 , individual and team competitions were held in the disciplines of men's epee, men's saber and men's floret. Only foil was fought for women. The team championships took place at the fencing club in Tauberbischofsheim . The championships were organized by the German Fencing Association .

Four titles went to FC Tauberbischofsheim, only the title in the men's saber went to OFC Bonn. The men's foil was won by Thomas Bach , and Cornelia Hanisch was the winner in the women's race . Alexander Pusch won in the sword and Jörg Stratmann in the saber .
