The German fencing championships in 1938 were held in the disciplines of men's floret, men's epee and men's saber. The women only competed in foil. The individual championships were organized by the fencing department and took place from April 21st to 24th in Hanover , on the evening of April 20th there was already a meeting of the judges. A total of 301 fencers were registered. The team championships were held in Leipzig from October 27th to 30th, 1938.

Men's

Foil (single)

84 fencers were registered in the men's foil singles. The competitions took place on Friday April 22nd. The winner was the Viennese Roman Fischer with ten wins in the final round . Josef Losert (Vienna) was second with nine wins, August Heim (TV Offenbach) third with eight wins.

11 teams were entered in the men's floret team competition. Hermannia Frankfurt won in the final round in front of the sports community of the SS Berlin, the fencing club Wiesbaden and the TV 1848 Saarbrücken.

79 fencers were registered in the epee singles. The competitions took place on Saturday, April 23rd. Siegfried Lerdon from the fencing club Hermannia Frankfurt prevailed with 9 wins ahead of Kretschmann (8 wins) and Erwin Kroggel (7 wins), who both fought for the sports community of the SS Berlin.

In the saber singles 81 fencers were registered. The preliminary rounds took place on Saturday, April 23rd, the final round on Sunday. With 11 wins in the final round, last year's winner August Heim won ahead of Hans Esser (Düsseldorf, 9 wins) and Josef Losert (Vienna, 8 wins).

In the women's foil singles, 57 female fencers were registered. The competitions took place on Thursday April 21st. Hedwig Haß was able to prevail in a playoff against Friederike Wenisch. Both had 8 wins in the final round. Trude Jacob was third with 6 wins
