Jörg Stratmann

Jörg Stratmann (born April 7, 1954 in Letmathe ) is a former German saber fencer . He was multiple German champion and took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. His father Günter was also a successful fencer and participant in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. Stratmann fought for the FSG Iserlohn .

Athletic career

Stratmann has been a member of the FSG Iserlohn since 1970 and was initially trained by his father. As a junior he won several German championships in his age group. In 1974 he won the German individual championship among the active for the first time. This was followed by three further championship titles in 1978 , 1979 and 1984 as well as two runner-up championships in 1977 and 1981 .

Stratmann took part in the 1977 World Championships in Buenos Aires and 1978 in Hamburg. At the 1984 Olympic Games he fought both in the saber singles and with the team. In the individual he was eliminated in the semi-finals with one win and four defeats as the last of his round and was 22. With the team he finished fourth after the battle for third place was just lost against Romania.

Professionally, Stratmann is a journalist and has worked for various newspapers such as Die Welt or the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as well as for the media department of the German Olympic Sports Confederation . As a sports editor, he also wrote numerous articles on the sport of fencing.
