Dieter Jung (fencer)

Dieter Jung (born October 10, 1940 in Würzburg ) is a former German sword fencer . He was a three-time German champion and a participant in the Olympic Games in 1968 and 1972 . He fought in the fencing department of the Würzburger Kickers , later with MTV Stuttgart .

Jung started fencing at the age of ten. His aunt Mary Jung was herself a successful fencer and trainer at the Würzburger Kickers, another aunt became a five-time German champion with the kickers' hockey department. Parallel to fencing, Jung was also a member of the Bavarian rowing society.

In 1960 Jung was seventh at the Junior World Championships, in 1966 , 1967 and 1970 German single champion in epee fencing, in addition he won several Bavarian championships in singles and with the Kickers team.

At the international level, Jung took part in world championships several times, and twice in the Olympic Games: 1968 in Mexico, 1972 in Munich. At the Games in Mexico in 1968, the men's team with Jung, Franz Rompza , Fritz Zimmermann , Max Geuter and Paul Gnaier narrowly missed a medal and finished fourth. In the individual, Jung was 25. In 1972, Jung did not compete in the individual, but was again part of the epee team ( Behr , Hehn , Hein , Jung and Geuter), which was eliminated with two wins and one defeat in the first round.

In 1980 Jung ended his active fencing career.
