Rosemarie Scherberger

Rosemarie "Romy" Scherberger , née Rosemarie Weiß , (born July 19, 1935 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 20, 2016 there ) was a German fencer from the Federal Republic of Germany who became German champion and twice with the all-German team at the Olympic Games participated.

Life

Scherberger started under her maiden name Rosemarie Weiß until 1962. She won her first international medal at the 1959 World Fencing Championships in Budapest. Together with Helmi Höhle , Helga Mees and Heidi Schmid , she received the bronze medal behind the Hungarians and the Soviet team. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , the German team took fourth place. In 1962 the foil fencer won her only German championship title.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , Rosemarie Scherberger reached the second round in the individual competition and was eliminated there in the jump-off. The German team with Helga Mees, Heidi Schmid, Gudrun Theuerkauff and Scherberger lost in the semi-finals to the Hungarians, but won the battle for the bronze medal against the Italians.

On December 11, 1964, she was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the Federal President.
