The association for physical exercises Sankt Augustin 1902 eV (founded as TV Siegburg-Mülldorf 02 ) is a German sports association from Sankt Augustin . He has offers in fencing , tennis , table tennis , gymnastics , basketball , handball and health sports . The VfL saber fencers became German team champions in 1985.

history

The association was founded on June 26, 1902 in the Neuhöfer pub by 40 members. At the beginning of the 1920s, the club began playing handball, making it one of the first clubs of the West German Handball Association . On June 17 and 18, 1933, the TV Siegburg-Mülldorf hosted the first gymnastics festival in the district of Sieg of the German Gymnastics Association . The table tennis department was founded in 1969, the tennis department in 1971 and the fencing department in 1979. On June 6, 1973, a general meeting decided to change the name to VfL Sankt Augustin , which took account of the local reorganization .

The club's sports facilities were the Weber hall on Bonner Strasse, from the 1930s the stadium on Siegdamm , since 1957 the gym on Siegdamm and since 1988 the multi-purpose hall in Mülldorf. Since 1980 the club has also had its own tennis facility with three courts, to which a clubhouse has been connected since 1983 and now also a boules court .

Handball

The first field handball team of VfL was set up in the 1921/22 season. In 1934/35 , the 1st team won the Gau Championship Middle Rhine and took part in the final round of the German Championship , to which more than a thousand spectators came to the stadium on Siegdamm . In 1936 the team became national champions, from 1953 they played in the major league before switching to indoor handball in 1971 . The first women's team played from 1995 to 1999 in the Regionalliga , the third highest German division. From 2008 there was a syndicate with TuS Niederpleis , and gaming operations have since been suspended.

fencing

The fencing department was founded in 1979 by national coach Siegfried Prediger from Hungary, who was previously at OFC Bonn and worked as a sports teacher at the Rhein-Sieg-Gymnasium . Already one year later the first successes could be achieved in the saber : The team finished third in the German championships , Jürgen Nolte won in the singles in the juniors as well as in the active ones. Between 1980 and 1990 he was a total of 8 German individual champion and thus still holds the record as the most successful saber fencer at German championships. He started for VfL in 1984 at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , where he finished 15th in the individual and 4th with the team.

The club's greatest success was winning the 1985 German team championship by Jürgen Nolte, Gerold Boch , Roland Redelin , Imri Dobos , Claus-Dieter Stotzem and Markus Dreiner against the favored OFC Bonn. Nolte left the club in 1986 and moved to Bonn, but continued to train in Sankt Augustin. As the first German he won a saber 1988 World Cup and finished in the same year at the Olympics in Seoul in eighth place, with the team he was 6 there Nolte was 1989 Vice World Champion and 1990 and 1991 world championship bronze medalist with the team. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 , he again reached eighth place in the individual, the German saber team came fifth.
