The Prince's Skating Club was an ice rink in Knightsbridge , a district of the City of Westminster in London .

history

The ice rink was opened on November 7, 1896 by Prince's Sporting Club in Montpelier Square . It was only open to club members and was aimed at the elite of British figure skaters who did not want to train on a crowded ice rink. At that time the rink was the second largest ice rink in the country after the ice rink in Stockport. In March 1900 the first ice hockey varsity match between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge took place on the ice rink , which Oxford won 7: 6. Previously, Oxford had insisted on playing with bandy bats and a lacrosse ball.

In October 1908, the figure skating competitions were held on the ice rink as part of the 1908 Summer Olympics .

In March 1910, the first international ice hockey match between England and Scotland took place on the rink . Seven years later, the ice rink was closed for the summer. The building was later used by Daimler Hire and was finally demolished in the mid-1970s.
