The Solent is a strait and a branch of the English Channel between the south coast of England off Southampton and the Isle of Wight .
General
The Solent strait is the area between the south coast of England and the Isle of Wight, one of the main holiday destinations for the English. The Solent is one of the best sailing areas in England.
geography
As tidal waters, the waters of the Solent have extreme flow conditions. Tributaries to the Solent are the Medina , which flows into the Solent from the Isle of Wight in Cowes Harbor , and Southampton Water .
The eastern part of the Solent is formed by the Spithead strait , which lies northeast of the Isle of Wight and south of Portsmouth .
history
In 1545, the Mary Rose sank in a naval battle against the French during the Italian War of 1542–1546 in the Solent.
In 1782 the warship Royal George capsized and sank in the Solent while at anchor. Between 800 and 950 people drowned.
Events
The Solent is the venue for the Cowes Week sailing regatta that has been held since 1826 and is held annually in August in the town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. In addition, the Admiral's Cup took place here until 1999 .
As part of the Summer Olympics in London in 1908 , the Solent was the venue for sailing regattas .
