At the 1st Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 , two men's tennis competitions were held. The tennis tournament took place inside the Velodrome Neo Faliro and in the Athens Lawn Tennis Club .
Between 13 and 15 athletes from six nations took part, including six Greeks. Some of the double teams like the medalists were of different nationalities. None of the top players like Harold Mahony , Robert Wrenn , William Larned or Wilfred Baddeley took part. In order to enlarge the main field, the organizers added athletes from other disciplines such as the weightlifter Momcsilló Tapavicza or the athletes George Stuart Robertson , Edwin Flack and Friedrich Adolf Traun .

The final in the Velodrome Neo Faliro was played by John Pius Boland and Dionysios Kasdaglis , which Boland won in two sets. Boland was the first Olympic champion in tennis. There was no match for the bronze medal. A total of 13 players from six nations took part in the individual competition. In addition to the final result, it is only known that the match between Friedrich Adolf Traun and Boland ended 2: 3 in sets.

The final in the Velodrome Neo Faliro was contested by the Irishman John Pius Boland and the German Friedrich Adolf Traun against the Greeks Dionysios Kasdaglis and Dimitrios Petrokokkinos , which Boland and Traun won. So Boland won the double competition after the single competition. On the part of the IOC , the team of silver medalists is classified as a mixed doubles, although both players are traditionally Greeks. There was no match for the bronze medal, it was given to Edwin Flack and George Stuart Robertson . A total of ten players from four nations took part in the double competition. Only the results of the final have been handed down.
