- September 30 : On the initiative of the American newspaper publisher and sports enthusiast James Gordon Bennett junior , the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett , a race for gas balloons, is held for the first time in Paris . The Americans Frank Purdy Lahm and Henry Hersey are the first winners.

- May 6 : Ten automobiles take part in the first Targa Florio , a long-distance race on public mountain roads in Sicily. The initiator and namesake of the race is the entrepreneur Count Vincenzo Florio. The winner is Alessandro Cagno with the Fabbrica Automobili Itala team .
