The Princes Ice Hockey Club (also Prince's Skating Club ) was one of the earliest and most influential European bandy and ice hockey clubs and is considered by some sources to be the first ice hockey club in Great Britain.

history

The team, founded by Peter Patton in late 1896 , was based at Prince's Skating Club in Hammersmith . Opponents at the time were teams that were formed around the same time, such as the Niagara IHC , Brighton IHC and the Royal Engineers IHC . The London Canadiens were also founded in the Prince's Skating Club in 1902 and both teams took part in Europe's first ice hockey league , the English Ice Hockey League , which was held from November 1903 to February 1904. Princes IHC finished second in the league with five teams.

The club also took part in several bandy tournaments, including the Davos International Bandy Tournament and the Grindelwald Cup . The club won the latter three times in a row.

After a bandy tournament in Davos, the Princes Ice Hockey Club played a Canadian ice hockey game outside the United Kingdom for the first time in January 1904 when the team won 2-0 in Lyon against the Sporting Club de Lyon . A few days later, there was another win against Club des Patineurs de Paris . In January 1906, the Princes IHC traveled to Lyon again, won there again against SC Lyon and a few days later in Paris against the Club des Patineurs de Paris. In 1907 they played again against Lyon and a few days later against the Fédération des Patineurs de Belgique in Brussels .

In November 1908, the Princes IHC represented England at the first international ice hockey tournament in Berlin in the newly opened Berlin Ice Palace and defeated the Berlin HC and the Club des Patineurs de Paris to win the tournament.

In December 1908, the club played the first game under the rules of the Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace, founded in May 1908, on British soil against the Club des Patineurs de Paris .

In January 1909 they represented England at the Coupe de Chamonix and defeated the French representative after three extra times in the decisive final game.

In the following years, the Princes IHC, together with the successors of the London Canadians, the Oxford Canadians , traveled through Europe in winter to make the ice hockey game better known according to the Canadian rules of the LIHG and to promote the standardization of these rules. With the outbreak of World War I, the Princes Skating Club and with it the ice hockey team closed.

In 1927 a new Princes Ice Hockey Club was formed, playing on the Westminster ice rink. This club moved to the Queen's Club ice rink in 1930 and began playing in the English League the following year . During this time the club played partly as Princes and Queens . In 1933 the Princes IHC merged with the Queens Ice Hockey Club .
