J.Jeffries vs Jim Corbett 1903

James John "Gentleman Jim" Corbett (born September 1, 1866 in San Francisco , California , † February 18, 1933 in Bayside , Queens , NY ) was an American boxer . He was considered a representative of counter boxing.

Jim Corbett made his debut in the summer of 1886 under the name "Jim Dillon" and won after four rounds by disqualifying the opponent. After a total of 13 completed fights, including nine wins and two draws or non-rated fights, Corbett boxed on April 14, 1890 in Brooklyn , New York , against Dominick McCaffrey , five years earlier in the first heavyweight world championship after the introduction of Queensberry - rules against John L. Sullivan had lost. While the fight at that time lasted seven rounds, Corbett defeated McCaffrey after just 4 rounds. A year later, Corbett faced the colored Australian Peter "Black Prince" Jackson , whom world champion Sullivan had previously avoided. After 61 completed rounds, the fight was canceled with "No Decision" due to exhaustion of both fighters.

After another victory in a build-up battle, Jim Corbett challenged John L. Sullivan on September 7, 1892 to fight for the world championship crown. Although previously acted as a 1: 5 underdog, Corbett ultimately won by knockout in the 21st round, inflicting the defending champion's first defeat at all.

Although Corbett held the world title for a total of four and a half years, he only defended it once. In his second title defense in Carson City in the spring of 1897, Corbett was defeated by the British Bob Fitzsimmons with a one-punch knockout in the 14th round.

After another defeat by Tom Sharkey in late 1898, Corbett was the first boxer ever to have the opportunity to regain the lost heavyweight title a year and a half later. He stood on May 11, 1900 in Brooklyn , New York City , against the new world champion Jim Jeffries , who had previously defeated Bob Fitzsimmons prematurely. After Corbett had dominated the previously undefeated champion in phases, he had to take a heavy hit in the 23rd round and was also knocked out.

After this defeat, Corbett boxed twice. He played the first fight on August 30, 1900 against Charles McCoy , whom he knocked out in the fifth round. However, the fight is still considered to be possibly agreed. In 1903 Corbett challenged world champion James Jeffries to another title fight, but this time he lost prematurely after 10 rounds.

In the 1940s, Jim Corbett became popular again through the filming of his life story under the title The Cheeky Cavalier (OT: Gentleman Jim ) with the Australian actor Errol Flynn in the lead role. In 1975, Corbett was mentioned in the song Hurricane , written by Bob Dylan and Jacques Levy : He makes the people who want to put Rubin Carter in jail say of them that he is "not a gentleman Jim".

In 1990 Jim Corbett was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
