Stefan Frei (born April 20, 1986 in Altstätten ) is a Swiss football goalkeeper . Since 2014 he has been playing for Seattle Sounders FC in the top division of North American football, Major League Soccer (MLS).

Career

Youth and amateur football

Frei emigrated to the United States of America in early 2001 , where he gained his first experience in North American football at De La Salle High School in Concord , California . In his senior year, he was named Athlete of the Year 2005 by high school . From 2006 to 2008 he played for the University of California's college team , the California Golden Bears . In total, he completed 47 league appearances for the Bears in three years. In 2007 he was elected to the First Team All-American of the NCAA and was named the best college goalkeeper of the season. During the break of the season during his student days Frei completed six games for the San Francisco Seals (2006) and 18 games for the San José Frogs (2007 and 2008) in the USL Premier Development League .

Shortly before his emigration, Frei played alongside Tranquillo Barnetta and Reto Ziegler in the Swiss U-15 team when he stood between the posts against Scotland in October 2000 .

Professional career

After joining the Frogs and graduating from university, he took another step towards professional football with the MLS SuperDraft in 2009 . When Draft Frei was right in the first round as the 13th pick in the team of Toronto FC summoned after he earlier in the MLS Player Combine in 2009 as an MVP award. He ousted the Canadian international Greg Sutton from the goalkeeping position in his first professional season and made his professional debut on the opening game day of the 2009 season on March 21, in the 3-2 home win against the Kansas City Wizards . In the same season he won the Canadian Championship 2009 with the team . He also played in the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10 .
