Gregory "Greg" Sutton (born April 19, 1977 in Montreal ) is a former Canadian soccer goalkeeper .

Club career

Sutton played at St. Lawrence University for the St. Lawrence Saints in college football before he was selected as the only goalkeeper in the 1999 MLS College Draft in 23rd place by the Chicago Fire . At Chicago he was substitute goalkeeper behind Zach Thornton and came in the seasons 1999 and 2000 to a total of 5 appearances in the Major League Soccer . In the two years he also played in the USL A-League and came to some missions there. In 2000 he was handed over to the New York MetroStars for some time , but returned to Chicago without being used.

In 2001 Sutton joined the Canadian A-League club Montreal Impact . There he established himself as a regular goalkeeper and was one of the best goalkeepers in the USL. Between 2003 and 2006 he was named the best goalkeeper in the league four times in a row, and when he won the title in the 2004 season, he was also honored as the most valuable player of the season. Between 2001 and 2006 he completed 132 league appearances for Montreal and another 15 games in the playoffs.

In late 2006, Sutton signed a contract with the newly formed Canadian MLS team Toronto FC and was a regular goalkeeper at the start of the 2007 season . A concussion he suffered while preparing with the national team for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup put him out of action for the remainder of the season. After recovering from the 2008 season, he returned to the Toronto Gate. At the beginning of the 2009 season he lost his regular place to the new signing Stefan Frei and was released from his contract in early June 2009 because Toronto needed a place on the senior roster and room at the salary cap for the new signing Nick Garcia .

For the 2010 season he signed a contract with the New York Red Bulls after he had already spent the pre-season with the team. For the Red Bulls he was in goal for the first time on April 27, 2010, in the US Open Cup qualifier against the Philadelphia Union . On August 11, 2010, he made his MLS debut for New York. At the beginning of the 2011 season, Sutton was the Red Bulls goalkeeper. After signing Frank Rost , the Canadian was loaned to Montreal Impact on July 16, 2011. There he was used once during the season and finally moved to the newly founded Montreal Impact franchise in the MLS. In the following season, however, the substitute goalkeeper came again only to 24 minutes.

In October 2012, Sutton announced his retirement after 14 years in professional football.

National team

Sutton made his debut in a friendly game against Barbados in the Canadian national team in 2004 and was then used irregularly for the country selection. Most of the time, Sutton only played the role of substitute behind Pat Onstad or Lars Hirschfeld . In 2005, 2007 and 2009 he took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the national team. While he only made one appearance in the group stage in 2007, he was a regular goalkeeper in 2005 and 2009. At the Gold Cup 2011 he was no longer part of the squad.
