The department of Lago Argentino is located in the southwest of the province of Santa Cruz in southern Argentina and is one of the seven administrative units in the province.
It borders in the north on the Departamento Río Chico , in the east on the Departamento Corpen Aike , in the south on the Departamento Güer Aike and in the west on Chile .
The capital of the department Lago Argentino is El Calafate , which unites 16,655 of the 18,864 inhabitants (as of October 27, 2010 census). The second largest town is El Chaltén with 1,627 inhabitants, followed by Tres Lagos with 282 inhabitants.

The department has a number of attractions, such as Lake Argentino , Lake Viedma , Los Glaciares National Park and the Fitz Roy mountain peak . Usually they are visited from the two places El Calafate and El Chaltén .
