The Argentinean Lake is a lake of about three times the size of Lake Constance in southern Argentina , the province of Santa Cruz ( Patagonia ). It is the largest lake in Argentina and is over 15,000 years old. It is fed by several glaciers, including the largest glacier in South America , the Upsala Glacier and the most famous, the Perito Moreno Glacier . The lake drains into the Atlantic via the Río Santa Cruz .

glacier

The western end of the heavily branched lake extends into the Andes . The glacier tongues of the southern ice field flow into the lake in several places.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is world famous , with huge icebergs breaking off into the lake from its 50 meter high glacier front. In some years the glacier tongue divides part of the lake. Then one part builds up until the pressure of the water masses becomes too great and the glacier tongue bursts in a wild spectacle (last March 2018). The lake is part of the Los Glaciares National Park .

location

The east side of the lake is lost in the vast plains of the pampas .

The most important town on the lake shore is El Calafate , the residents live from the tourists who want to visit the calving glacier.

It lies between the 50th and 51st degrees of southern latitude and the 72nd and 73rd degree of longitude.

history

Lake Argentino was discovered by the seaman Valentin Feilberg , who came to the lake in 1873 . However, he mistook it for Lake Viedma , which was discovered almost 100 years earlier. On February 15, 1877 , Perito Moreno and Carlos Moyano came to the lake. Moreno, the namesake of the glacier of the same name, gave it the name "Lago Argentino".
