The Pehuenches department is located in the north of the Neuquén province in southern Argentina and is one of the province's 16 administrative units .

It borders the province of Mendoza to the north, the province of Río Negro to the east, the Añelo department to the south, the Loncopué department to the southwest and the Ñorquín and Chos Malal departments to the west .

The capital of the Pehuenches department is Rincón de los Sauces .

The Pehuenches department is divided into the municipalities of Rincón de los Sauces (first category), Buta Ranquil (second category), Barrancas (third category) and Octavio Pico ( Comisión de Fomento ). Other small settlements in the Pehuenches department are Auquinco , Chacayco , Curaco , El Cruce , Las Cortaderas and Rincón Colorado .
