The Zapala Department is located in the center of the Neuquén Province in southern Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered on the northeast by the Añelo Department , the east by the confluencia department , on the southeast by the Departamento Picún Leufú , on the southwest by the catán lil department and to the northwest by the Picunches Department .
The capital of the department Zapala is the same Zapala .

The Zapala Department is divided into Zapala (a first category municipality), Mariano Moreno (a second category municipality) and the Comisiones de Fomento Covunco Abajo , Los Catutos , Ramón M. Castro and Villa del Puente Picún Leufú . Other small settlements ( parajes ) are Barda Negra , Bardita , La Amarga , Laguna Blanca , Laguna Miranda , Los Hornos , Mallín del Muerto , Ñireco , Paso de los Indios and Santo Domingo .
