The Añelo department is located in the east of the Neuquén province in southern Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.

It borders the Pehuenches department to the north, the Río Negro province to the east, the Confluencia and Zapala departments to the south, and the Picunches and Loncopué departments to the west .

The capital of the Añelo department is the Añelo of the same name .

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 7,554 inhabitants (2001) to 8,652 inhabitants in 2005.

The department of Añelo is divided into a municipality of the first category ( San Patricio del Chañar ), a municipality of the second category ( Añelo ), the Comisiones de Fomento Aguada San Roque and Los Chihuidos and the small settlements ( parajes ) Agua de Canale , Auca Mahuida , Cañadón Nogales , Los Chihuidos and Punta Sierra .
