The Picún Leufú department is located in the east of the Neuquén province in southern Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the northeast by the Department of Confluencia , to the east by the Province of Río Negro , to the southwest by the Department of Collón Curá , to the west by the Department of Catán Lil and to the northwest by the Department of Zapala .

The capital of the department Picún Leufú is the same Picún Leufú .

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 4,272 inhabitants (2001) to 5,751 inhabitants in 2005.

The department of Picún Leufú is divided into the second category municipality Picún Leufú , the Comisiones de Fomento El Sauce and Paso Aguerre and the small settlements ( parajes ) Aguada del Carrizo and Limay Centro .
