The Santa Rosa Department is located in the east of the Catamarca Province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 16 administrative units.

It borders the province of Tucumán to the north, the province of Santiago del Estero to the east, the department of El Alto to the south and the department of Paclín to the west .

The capital of the department is Bañado de Ovanta .

geography

The western border of the Santa Rosa department is formed by the Sierras de la Viña , part of the Sierras Pampeanas , which were formed in pre-Cambrian times. Their structures are covered by younger layers from the Quaternary. The main river is the Manantiales River . The Rio San Francisco forms the western border of the department. The Sumampa reservoir contributed a lot to the development of Los Altos and its surroundings.

The Santa Rosa Department was established by provincial law in 1981 .

economy

The Santa Rosa department is mainly dedicated to agriculture and livestock, especially citrus fruit production , tobacco , fodder and vegetables . The place San Pedro is the agricultural center of the department due to its silo capacity for grain and its connection to the railroad.
