The department of Santa María is located in the northeast of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.
It borders the province of Salta to the north, the province of Tucumán to the east, the department of Andalgalá to the south and the department of Belén to the west .
The capital of the department is Santa María del Yocavil .
