The department of El Alto is located in the center of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.
It is bordered to the north by the Santa Rosa department , to the east by the province of Santiago del Estero , to the south by the departments of La Paz and Ancasti and to the west by the departments of Valle Viejo and Paclín .
The capital of the department is El Alto of the same name .
