The Capayán Department is located in the south of the Catamarca Province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 16 administrative units.

It borders the departments of Ambato and Pomán to the north, the departments of Fray Mamerto Esquiú , Valle Viejo , Ancasti and La Paz to the east and the province of La Rioja to the west .

The capital of the department is Huillapima .
