The Departamento Capital is located in the center of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.

It borders the Department of Ambato to the north, the departments of Fray Mamerto Esquiú and Valle Viejo to the east, and the Department of Capayán to the south and west .

The capital of the department is San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca .
