The department of Valle Viejo is located in the center of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.

It borders the Fray Mamerto Esquiú and Paclín departments to the north, the El Alto and Ancasti departments to the east, and the Capayán department to the south and west .

The capital of the department is San Isidro .
