The Tinogasta Department is located in the northwest of the Catamarca Province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 16 administrative units.

It is bordered by the Antofagasta de la Sierra department to the north, the Belén and Pomán departments to the east, the La Rioja province to the south and Chile to the west .

The capital of the department is Tinogasta of the same name . It is located 279 kilometers from the provincial capital San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca and 1,415 kilometers from Buenos Aires .
