The department of Pomán is located in the western center of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.

It is bordered to the north by the departments of Andalgalá and Belén , to the east by the department of Ambato , to the southeast by the department of Capayán and to the west by the province of La Rioja .

The capital of the department is Saujil .
