The department Belén is located in the north of the province of Catamarca in northwest Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units of the province.

It is bordered to the north by the province of Salta , to the east by the departments of Santa María and Andalgalá , to the south by the departments of Pomán and Tinogasta and to the west by the departments of Tinogasta and the Antofagasta de la Sierra .

The capital of the department is Belén of the same name . It is located 1,465 kilometers from Buenos Aires .
