Goya is the capital of the Goya department of the same name in the southwest of the Corrientes province in northeast Argentina . It is located on the Río Paraná and with 73,511 inhabitants (2012) is the second largest city in the province.
location
Goya is located on the east bank of the Río Paraná, which forms a flat bank in the area. The area belongs to the transition area between Pampas and Gran Chaco . The climate is subtropical and humid.
history
Goya was first mentioned in a document in 1772. In 1774 the place was recognized as an official stopover on the way between Asunción and Buenos Aires . In 1812 the road network was laid out and the place gradually developed into a river port. In 1852 Goya finally received city rights . There were floods in 1878, 1905 and 1941, but these did not stop the city from developing.
Economy, culture, education
Goya is the center of an area where mainly tobacco is grown. The city is also a regional industrial center. The city has Goya Airport (IATA: OYA, ICAO: SATG) with a runway of 7,415 ft.
Goya has been the bishopric of the Roman Catholic diocese of Goya since 1961 . The city is home to the wayside shrine of the Mother Thrice Admirable.
Goya belongs to the district of the German Honorary Consulate in Santa Fé, Argentina.
The state universities Universidad Nacional de Lomas de Zamora (UNLZ) , Universidad Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE) and the private universities Catholic University of Salta (UCASAL) , Universidad Empresarial Siglo 21 , Universidad de la Cuenca del Plata (UCP) have branches in Goya .
Events
The Surubí Festival is celebrated in Goya at the end of April / beginning of May . The surubí is a common fish in the region. At the same time, the agricultural-industrial fair Expo-Goya will be held.
