San Juan Capistrano , named after John Capistrano , is a city in Orange County in the US state of California , United States , with 35,000 inhabitants (as of 2004 ). The geographical coordinates are: 33.50 ° North, 117.65 ° West. The urban area has a size of 37.1 km².
history
San Juan Capistrano is one of the oldest western settlements in present-day California. The place was created around 1776 as a mission during the Spanish colonial times. San Juan Capistrano was formed around the mission station of the same name, the remains of which have been preserved from an earthquake of December 18, 1812, when 40 people died. In 1986 the new San Juan Capistrano Mission Basilica was completed.
