history

Originally Luiseño Indians inhabited the land on which San Jacinto later developed. They lived in several villages and called themselves Payomkowishum (English: people from the west ). During the time of the first contact with Spanish conquerors in the 16th century, they lived in the southern California coastal area. Their land reached from what is now south of Los Angeles County over a distance of 80 km to the north of what is now San Diego County . Inland, it extended up to 48 km. The Indian tribe owes its name to the Spanish mission station San Luis Rey de Francia, which was founded by St. Louis IX. was consecrated by France .

The Anza Trail , one of the first European overland routes to California, ran through the San Jacinto Valley in the 1770s . Fathers of the mission station named the valley after St. Hyacinthus of Caesarea (Spanish: San Jacinto) and founded an outpost here.

In 1842 the valley fell into the possession of the Spanish settler José Antonio Estudillo . In the 1860s, his family sold some parts of their land, so that a small American settlement was formed there. In 1868 the residents asked for their own school, two years later a post office and the first shop were opened. Today the year 1870 is considered to be the year San Jacinto was founded.

In 1883 plans were made to further develop the community. On April 20, 1888, San Jacinto was raised to a city with its own administration, then still as part of San Diego County . San Jacinto is therefore one of the oldest cities in the region. In the same year San Jacinto was connected to the railway network. In May 1893, Riverside County was created by assignments of San Diego Counties and San Bernardino Counties . Since then, San Jacinto has been assigned to Riverside County.

According to local records, San Jacinto has been hit by two powerful earthquakes so far: the first on Christmas 1899, the second on April 21, 1918.

For a long time the main component of the economy was agriculture. Another factor was tourism, which developed due to the nearby thermal springs.

On July 15, 1937 in San Jacinto ended the then longest continuous flight, as Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov with a Tupolev ANT-25 from Moscow via the Arctic flew a 10,078 km long route. To the west of San Jacinto's center there is now a memorial to commemorate the flight. The landing site is now listed as California Historical Landmark number 989.
