Cave paintings in Guachipas

Cerro Cuevas Pintadas de Guachipas : In 1965, near Guachipas, on the national road 68 that leads to the town of Cafayate, a cave system with 33 passages, the walls of which are covered with cave paintings. Its origin is estimated to have been between 900 and 1470 AD. The cave paintings have been declared a national historical monument and are open to visitors.

Ambrosetti's eaves, on the hill of the Cuevas Pintadas or Las Juntas, is best preserved as it was fenced in with wires to protect it from vandals. Special care is required to avoid mosses, lichens and aerophilic plants. The paintings were created on a geological formation from the Cretaceous and stand out from the rest of the surrounding hills in their shape, which was created from the red sandstone rocks.

The Guachipas cave paintings have been declared a national historical monument. The Cuevas Pintadas de Guachipas hill consists of 33 eaves on which the original drawings of people as well as abstract shapes have left. The predominant motifs are camelids and "men with shield", these are anthropomorphic figures of various shapes, colors and styles. The panels show scenes and figures from the daily life of other historical epochs: religious ceremonies, warriors and animals such as suris, jaguars, birds, insects and llamas.

This place - whose original name was Oma Sacopo (which means the lap of the canoes of the sun ) - was consecrated to the sun. Caves of this type, along with the remains of indigenous cities built in different eras, are one of the clearest examples of the level of civilization that the original inhabitants of today's Salta territory reached before the arrival of the Spaniards.

architecture

  • Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción de Guachipas . According to documents from 1610, the church of Guachipas was built by the Jesuits . The task of the parish was to evangelize the huachipas from the Valles Calchaquíes .
