The Avellaneda Department is located in the southern center of the Santiago del Estero Province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units .
It is bordered to the north by the departments of Sarmiento and San Martín , to the east by the department General Taboada , to the south by the department of Aguirre and to the west by the departments of Salavina and Atamisqui .
The capital of the Avellaneda department is Herrera . It is 160 km from the provincial capital Santiago del Estero , which can be reached via the Ruta Nacional 34 .

economy
The basis of the economy is cattle farming with the rearing of cattle, woolly sheep, pigs and goats. Agriculture produces cotton, corn, wheat, onion, watermelon, pumpkin, melon, and sweet potato.
