The department of Copo is located in the north of the province of Santiago del Estero in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units .

It is bordered to the north by the province of Salta , to the north and east by the province of Chaco , to the south by the Alberdi department and to the west by the Pellegrini department . With an area of ​​12,604 km² or 4.7 percent of the total area, it is the third largest department in the province of Santiago del Estero.

The capital of the Copo department is Monte Quemado . It is located on Ruta Nacional 16 , 330 km from the provincial capital, Santiago del Estero . The latter can be reached via Ruta Provincial 5.
