The department Río Hondo is located in the west of the province of Santiago del Estero in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units .

It is bordered by the Jiménez department to the north, the Banda department to the east, the Capital and Guasayán departments to the south, and the Tucumán province to the west .

The capital of the Río Hondo department is Termas de Río Hondo .
