Donnie Burns

Donnie Burns , MBE (* 1959 in Hamilton , Scotland ) is a former professional British tournament dancer .

With a very good diploma, he was admitted to the Law School of Glasgow University . After two years he broke off his studies in favor of his dance career. While in Glasgow , Burns worked as an editor for the Guardian and was promoted to senior advertising and marketing executive for the newspaper.

Donnie Burns started his dancing career at the age of six. At the age of twelve he won the junior championship of the Scottish Open in the standard and Latin American dances. Donnie Burns was a finalist in all age groups of the British Championships : Juvenile , Junior , Amateur and Professional .

During his career, Donnie Burns remained unbeaten in all the tournaments he competed in for nearly two decades, earning him the Guinness Book of Records as a world record holder . Together with his partner Gaynor Fairweather he was 14 times world champion in Latin American dances , 13 times in a row (1984-1996, 1998). Both dancers received the Order of the British Empire Member Level (MBE) in 1994 because of these achievements .

On June 2, 2005, Donnie Burns was elected President of today's World Dance Council , one of the two international dance sport organizations.

From 1999 to 2008 Donnie Burns was married to Nicole Burns-Hansen , who was herself a Swiss champion in Latin American dances. He has been married to the American dancer Heidi Groskreutz since 2008.
