The Choya department is located in the southwest of the Santiago del Estero province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units .

It borders on the Guasayán Department to the north, the Ojo de Agua , Silípica and Loreto departments to the east, the Province of Cordoba to the south and the Catamarca Province to the west .

The capital of the Choya Department is Frías . It is 148 km from the provincial capital Santiago del Estero and can be reached via the Ruta Provincial 64 .
