Population development of Wiesbaden
This article shows the population development of Wiesbaden in tabular and graphical form.
Population development
The population of Wiesbaden was only a few hundred people in the Middle Ages and early modern times . It grew only slowly and went back again and again through the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. The Thirty Years War (1618–1648) and a plague epidemic in 1634/35 had a devastating effect on the place. In 1648 only 80 citizens , 13 inmates and one Jew , plus their families, lived in Wiesbaden.
Further plague epidemics from 1665 to 1667, 1711 and 1722 decimated the population again. In 1722, 1,329 inhabitants lived in the place again. According to the list at the time, 253 were citizens (men), 262 women (women), 756 children and 58 bystanders. The children also included non-naturalized and unmarried people over 30 years of age; Officials possibly living in Wiesbaden were not recorded.
With the onset of industrialization in the 19th century, population growth accelerated. This was favored by the economically favorable location on the Rhine and the proximity to the Ruhr area . In 1800 there were only 2,239 people living in the city, in 1900 there were already 86,000. In 1905 the population of the city of Wiesbaden exceeded the limit of 100,000, which made it a major city . Due to the incorporation of numerous places on October 1, 1926 and April 1, 1928, the population rose by around 50,000 to 153,000 inhabitants. In 1939 there were 170,000 people in Wiesbaden.
During the Second World War , the city was largely spared from the Allied bombing raids. In the period between August 1940 and March 1945, a total of 18 percent of the apartments were destroyed by the air raids and around 1,700 people lost their lives. The heavy bombing raid on the night of February 2nd to 3rd, 1945 failed to have the planned effect due to the poor weather conditions. On March 28, 1945, the city was occupied by US troops.
On August 10, 1945, Wiesbaden's population grew due to the incorporation of the districts of Mainz on the right bank of the Rhine (1946 = 18,266 inhabitants; 2,261.99 hectares, 1950 = 21,407 inhabitants). In 1947 the number of inhabitants exceeded the limit of 200,000. The immigration of guest workers and foreigners began in the 1950s . The incorporation of numerous places on January 1, 1977 brought a gain of around 20,000 people to 270,000 inhabitants. On December 31, 2010, the “ official population ” according to the Hessian State Statistical Office was 275,976 (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1830 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1969) and the State Statistical Office (from 1970). From 1840 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1840, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.

Population forecast
In their 2006 “Guide to Demographic Change 2020”, in which the Bertelsmann Foundation provides data on the development of the population of 2,959 municipalities in Germany, a population increase of 1.3 percent (3,512 people) is predicted for Wiesbaden between 2003 and 2020 . It should be noted, however, that according to the 2011 census, Wiesbaden's population of 269,121 is already significantly lower by approx. 10,000 inhabitants (./. Approx. 4%) than the number given by the city of approx. 279,000. Deviating from this, the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) forecasts an increase in the population of 5.5% from 2011 to 2025, which would amount to around 15,000 inhabitants.
