The Salavina department is located in the southern center of the Santiago del Estero province in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units .

It borders the Avellaneda Department in the north, the Aguirre Department in the east, the Miter Department in the south and the Quebrachos and Atamisqui Department in the west .

The capital of the Salavina department is Los Telares .
