The department of Sarmiento is located in the center of the province of Santiago del Estero in northwest Argentina and is one of the province's 27 administrative units . With an area of 1,549 km² it is the 25th place of the departments of the province.
It is bordered by the Figueroa department to the north, the Juan F. Ibarra department to the east, the Avellaneda department to the south and the San Martín and Robles departments to the west .
The capital of the Sarmiento department is Garza . It has 2,295 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ), that is 49 percent of the department's population, and is 97 km from the provincial capital, Santiago del Estero .
